Loft Insulation: The Easiest Way to Cut Your Energy Bills

JMS Eco22 March 20263 min read

Why Your Loft Matters So Much

Heat rises. It's simple physics, and it's the reason an uninsulated loft is one of the biggest sources of wasted energy in a UK home. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a quarter of your home's heat is lost through the roof if it's not properly insulated.

For most homes, loft insulation is the single most cost-effective energy improvement you can make.

How Much Could You Save?

The savings depend on what you're starting with:

  • No existing insulation to 270mm: Save around £355 per year
  • Top-up from 120mm to 270mm: Save around £55 per year
  • Installation cost (if paying privately): £300-500 for a typical semi-detached

That means if you're starting from scratch, loft insulation pays for itself in just over a year. Very few home improvements offer that kind of return.

What's Involved?

Loft insulation is one of the least disruptive energy upgrades. For a standard loft with open joists, the process is straightforward:

  1. We inspect your loft space for damp, ventilation, and access
  2. Mineral wool rolls are laid between and across the joists
  3. The recommended depth is 270mm (about 10.5 inches)
  4. The whole job typically takes 2-3 hours

There's no mess downstairs, no structural work, and you can use the loft as normal afterwards - though we'd recommend boarding over the insulation if you use it for storage.

Could You Get It Free?

If you receive certain benefits or have a household income under the qualifying threshold, you may be eligible for fully funded loft insulation through the ECO4 or GBIS government schemes. This covers the full cost of materials and installation.

Check your eligibility in 60 seconds - there's no obligation and we'll tell you exactly what you qualify for.

When to Insulate

The best time to insulate your loft is before winter, but the truth is any time works. The sooner it's done, the sooner you start saving. If your current insulation is less than 270mm deep, topping up is quick, cheap, and effective.
